First Visits

1. Consultation Appointment

Patients can visit our office for a consultation without being referred by a dentist or dental specialist. Often our patients are referred by friends, patients and other family members.

If medical forms have not been previously made out and forwarded to us, the receptionist will provide them to you and assist you with their completion.

The initial consultation will involve an examination of the patient's teeth and bite to determine whether treatment is needed. The type of treatment to achieve a good result will be considered along with the timing of treatment. A general discussion will be held with the patient/parent.

2. Records

If it appears that treatment will be required at this time, full diagnostic records will be taken at this visit or another appointment will be made at a later date. The diagnostic records will involve:

  • Cephalometric (skull) radiograph to determine the relative positions of the teeth, jaws and cranial structures, as well as the soft tissue profile. A panoramic radiograph of the upper and lower teeth. Other radiographs may be required depending upon the problem. An accurate set of impressions of the patients teeth will be taken so that models can be made to assess the size of the teeth and analyze their position in relation to each other. Digital photographs will be taken of the patients face and teeth. A vertical growth chart will be made out to determine the level of skeletal maturity.

3. The Discussion (Presentation) Appointment

If necessary, following the collection and analysis of the orthodontic records, an appointment will be set up to review the treatment plan. All options will be reviewed along with appliances required, time of treatment, and an estimate provided of orthodontic fees.
